Chapter 26: The Husband

The present

Gary Tunney was sitting in Adrian’s chair when he arrived at work an hour earlier than expected the next morning.

‘Comfortable?’ he said to Tunney, who was reading through the papers Adrian had given him, his feet up on the desk.

‘We need to talk.’

‘About Dominic? What did you find?’

‘Well, the good news is, he’s not having an affair.’ Was that good news? Adrian didn’t think so.

‘So what’s with all the hotel bills and stuff?’

‘I haven’t quite figured it out yet, but whatever it is, it’s illegal, and very, very bad.’

‘You’re kidding?’

‘I wish I was, my friend!’

‘So if you haven’t figured it out, what makes you think he’s up to something bad?’

‘It’s a gut feeling, with a tiny bit of evidence. But when there’s money involved, there’s always evidence somewhere, some kind of paper trail.’

‘OK then, what do you have so far in the way of evidence?’

‘Not enough is the short answer.’

‘Are you being deliberately vague here, Tunney?’

‘I think he might be a drug baron or something.’

‘Dominic? Are you sure?’

‘I’m not sure, no, but it’s something I’m considering. The thing is, even though he moves his money around a lot, some of it seems to come from nowhere. Like if you add together all of the profit from all of his companies, subtract all of his expenditures and all of his bank accounts, none of it makes any sense. Not to mention the fact that three of his companies are in his wife’s name.’

Adrian’s ears pricked up at this.

‘Say that again.’

‘His wife, she’s a director of three of these companies, although he is a proxy signatory. Her signature doesn’t seem to be on any other paperwork, other than the original company application docs.’

‘So she doesn’t know about those companies?’

‘Hard to guess, really. She might. She might not. It’s probably just a tax dodge.’

‘How much money are we talking here? Overall …’ He hated to ask, but in the context of the situation, he thought he should know.

‘Big millions, we’re talking upper fifties overall. But sometimes a lot more, sometimes a lot less. Generally, it’s a pretty healthy-looking balance. I say drug dealer the way the money moves makes it look like a regular cycle and that’s pretty common when it’s involving drugs. If you want, I can see if I can tie the patterns in his income with criminal activity in the county.’

‘You can do that?’

‘It’s my own algorithm that I’m developing. I’ve been running it through old cases that are already solved to see if the program picks up on it. It takes into account location as well. Say, for example, you have a serial rapist who travels around – except you don’t know that, but you catch a guy for something or other and then you put all the details through the system. The fact that women were raped in each place he visited at the time of visit would flag up on the program.’ Tunney had the glint of a mad genius in his eye as he tried to explain his system to Adrian.
